POW WOW PEOPLE

A couple pards and I went up to the Pow Wow on the Winnebago Rez last week. Once again, it was a great time being with the people and collecting some fresh shots along the way. For me these events are really special for many reasons...by far the most colorful and dramatic photo opportunity out there. I love it! Here are a few of my favorite from the weekend...

Strap it on and let's go...

Can I have this dance?

You can see a lot more pow wow pix in my 'Winnebago Pow Wow 2013' Album at https://www.facebook.com/tidballphoto

PORTA (potty), PORTUGAL

Well, maybe that's a little harsh, but we did get the impression that picturesque Porta has seen better days. Hit hard, like a lot of surrounding countries by recent economic woes, Porta seems to be suffering a lot these days...a far cry from the time when this East Coast river port city launched sailing ships which ruled the waves, colonized countries worldwide and brought back plenty of bounty.

These unique flat bottom boats transport barrels of wine (including famous Port) up and down the river...

Good Luck, Porta...
You're gonna need it,

POW WOW REVIVAL...

In 2002 my exhibition called 'PowWow Plains' showed at the Great Plains Art Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Since then it has been touring the region and getting quite a bit of exposure. On July 5th, a considerable portion of original show will open again and be on display at the Jacht Club in the Haymarket District, across the street from the Mill Coffee Shop. If you are in town stop on by. And, happy 4th to everybody from some true patriots...

It's not only the powerful drumming and singing, and the wonderful dancing that impresses at the Pow Wow. Other priorities are also on display... the way people interact, the honoring of the flag and the veterans, the respect for the elders and family, the generosity and the joy of simple pleasures...  For me, to be welcome in that circle has been genuinely refreshing...

This dancer showed an awesome display of endurance. With temperatures around 105 all afternoon, he refused to take refuge in the shade. After each dance performance, he stayed in the direct sun in full regalia! All the others were heard commenting on his great power and resilience. It was definitely impressive...

If you have never been to a Pow Wow event before, I highly recommend the experience. Go with an open mind and a humble attitude and you will be greatly rewarded.
I hope to see you there,
Tom

A FESTIVE DAY IN SALAMANCA...

All dressed up and plenty of places to go...
Lots of people lined up to get married, partying, out enjoying the day... What a scene! It was a great day for me since I prefer shooting people and there was certainly an abundance of opportunities for that... all in the old city of Salamanca...

I couldn't help noticing all the sturdy legs...but, it makes a lot of sense. People here walk everywhere they go...

 Join the party...
Everybody's welcome,
Tom
